How to meal prep for beginners. Who’s Ready?
Does that question excite you, or does it make you feel overwhelmed?
Let’s first start there..
Meal Prep should make your life easier. It should be a great tool that allows you to feed yourself, your family quickly, and hassle free.
If you happen to feel that sense of overwhelm, you may be doing too much at once.
Or maybe you haven’t even tried it yet, because the thought of meal prepping gives you anxiety?
Either way I want to make it easier for you to execute this process.
Are you ready?
1. Keep It Simple!
Often times, when people think of meal prep they think about all the food options, the different recipes, proportioning everything out, the calories, the this the that.
Therefore, don’t make it that complicated! keep it simple.
Unless your training for a fitness competition, which most aren’t..so guess what? You don’t need to worry about weighing all the food, getting everything proportioned to the T, or counting calories. That sh*t is too frustrating!
Instead, use the hand method to measure food if you need easy guidance found here!
Next, in keeping prep SIMPLE.. Only prep the meals that are necessary for you, and your family.
For instance, only choose to prep breakfast, and lunch for the week, because that’s when you’re on the go. Therefore you have more time to make dinner when you get home in the evenings.
Or perhaps, you may be you’re like me, and may need to prep only lunch, and dinner because, you work late. In this case, having grab & go meals could be best for your schedule.
Overall, remember you don’t need to prep every single meal, just the ones that make your life more convenient.
Another way to keep it SIMPLE is to choose EASY RECIPES with few ingredients. Here is a shopping list to make it easy for you!
Lastly, in prepping meals the simple way, is to cook as much as you can at once. In short, use the crockpot for meats, use multiple pans to bake multiple foods (i.e. veggies on one tray, sweet potato on another tray) and use the stove top for cooking rice, pasta, etc.
Although they all will have there own time frame in which to be fully cooked, you can at least use all your resources, and start them at the same time.
Simplicity is key babe!
2. Plan, Shop, & Prep Separately.
OMG YES! Please listen to this advice!
Take it from me. DO NOT try to Plan Recipes, Grocery Shop, and Prepare Food all in the SAME DAY!
That is it’s own recipe for disaster, and meal prep burnout!
Plan, Shop, and Prep on different days. For Example:
- Wednesday – Choose recipes ( keep it simple)
- Friday – Grocery shop.
- Sunday – Prep the Food for the upcoming week.
Although a quick easy tip, it’s a helpful one!
“Fail to plan, then plan to fail.”
3. Have Plenty of Storage Containers.
I’ve prepped so much food before to then find out I did not have enough food containers for all the delicious food I just prepped. (eye roll)..
I suggest going through you cupboards now, and seeing what containers, and lids you do have. See if the lids fit any of the containers. I can’t tell you how may times I’ve had so many lids, but not one would fit the containers I had left! How frustrating, right!?
If you happen to be low on containers, I suggest you stock up now before your meal prep sister!
Here are some that I like to use.
